Make less,
and make it nearby

Dimap is after two things at once: making consumption leaner, and making local manufacturing viable again. These are not two separate causes — they are the same mechanism seen from either side.

What making to order removes

Each link pulls the next. It is a chain, and it starts with one simple choice: make nothing before someone asks for it.

  1. No production in advance

    Industry makes in batches because batches bring the unit cost down. So it makes more than it will sell, and part of it ends up discounted, recycled or destroyed. A part printed to order cannot go unsold.

  2. No warehouse

    With no stock there is nothing to store, nothing to heat, nothing to shuttle from one hub to another while it waits for a buyer.

  3. No tooling per product

    An injection mould costs thousands of euros and only makes sense across very large volumes. That fixed cost is what rules out short runs and makes a spare part impossible to find ten years on. Printing does not need one.

  4. No trip around the world

    The file travels, not the object. What crosses thousands of kilometres weighs a few megabytes; what weighs three hundred grams travels a few kilometres.

  5. No needless replacement

    A washing machine knob, a gear, a clip: reprinting the part often costs less than replacing the appliance. It is probably the most concrete effect, and the most immediate.

And local becomes workable again

Local manufacturing did not disappear because it was bad, but because it could no longer keep up on price. What has changed is that the gap has closed.

The machines are already there

Thousands of people own a 3D printer that runs a few hours a week. There is no factory to build: there is capacity already installed, and idle.

The work is paid for locally

What the buyer pays goes to someone in their area, not to a middleman at the far end of the chain. The platform takes its share and leaves the rest where the part is made.

The price stands comparison

Depending on the object it matches an imported equivalent, sometimes beats it — especially for small quantities, bespoke parts, or a product nobody makes any more. On a large run of standard objects, industry remains unbeatable, and we will not pretend otherwise.

What we do not claim

  • Printing is not neutral. A machine uses electricity and turns plastic into something. We publish no carbon figure: we have not measured one, and an invented number would be worthless.
  • PLA is not magic. It comes from renewable resources, but it does not break down in nature: it needs an industrial composting facility.
  • Not everything can be printed. 3D printing replaces neither electronics, nor precision mechanics, nor mass production. It covers what industry no longer wants to make because the quantities are too small.
  • What we do claim is the removal of surplus. No batch launched blind, no unsold stock, no warehouse, no mould. That is verifiable, and it is already a lot.
